Columbus Day: What’s Open & Closed, Plus Things To Do
Columbus Day

Monday, October 14 is Columbus Day, and though not many offices take the day off, some do — and with public schools out, we’d bet there are some parents taking the day off, as well — so here’s some information on what’s open, what’s closed, and what’s happening to keep those kids entertained.

Government Offices, Parking, and Sanitation

Government offices, including the Department of Motor Vehicles, and courts are closed.

There is no mail delivery.

Alternate side parking is suspended (today through Thursday). All other regulations, including parking meters, remain in effect.

There is no garbage or recycling collection. If Monday is your regular garbage day, put your garbage out after 4pm today. If Monday is your regular recycling day, you must wait until next week to put out your recyclables.

Subways and Buses

Bus and subway service is on a regular schedule today, with some exceptions to bus service on Staten Island.

Libraries

All branches of the Brooklyn Public Library will be closed on Monday, October 14.

Columbus Day Parade

Manhattan: 35,000 marchers with over 100 groups, including bands, floats, and contingents travel along 5th Avenue from 47th Street to 72nd Street starting at 11:30am.

Things To Do With The Kids

Prospect Park: The Audubon Center is free, and will be open 12-4pm, as is the Lefferts Historic House, open from 12-5pm. The carousel will be open 12-5pm with $2 admission, and the Tennis Center will be open 7am-11pm. And if you’re planning to picnic or BBQ at the park, make sure to follow the rules.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden: It’s not normally open on Mondays, but Columbus Day is the exception. From 10am-6pm, check out the Oak Circle and Knit, Purl, Sow, plus sunflowers and other plants in bloom. Adults are $10, seniors and kids over 12 with ID are $5, and members and children under 12 are free. 990 Washington Avenue (between Montgomery Street and Sullivan Place), 718-623-7200.
