CIA Traffic Update

This is the 17th installment of our look at traffic on Coney Island Avenue. This week, two readers passed by the intersection of CIA and Cortelyou at around the same time, and called out the same cars. One of them is a truck that’s not blocking vehicular traffic, but is making the difficult crossing even worse for pedestrians.

Neighbor Jennifer came across the pickup truck parked in the northern crosswalk of CIA and Cortelyou (also, parked right in front of a fire hydrant).

“I cross CIA multiple times a day pushing a stroller with my 11-month-old daughter in it, and I have to walk into the road too many times to count,” she said. “There was no driver in this truck, so they did not get to hear my wrath!”

And neighbor alsivi also happened to spot the same truck that afternoon from another angle. Also notice the two other cars parked behind it in the no-standing zone.

We haven’t heard about that meeting with the DOT that Councilmember Mathieu Eugene told us earlier this month would happen soon, but as soon as we hear anything we will let you know. If you’re interested in attending such a meeting, reach out to the Councilmember’s office and say so:

Councilmember Mathieu Eugene: MEugene@council.nyc.gov
Jonah Rogoff, Legislative Director: jrogoff@council.nyc.gov
District office phone: 718-287-8762

This is just one of several traffic calming issues that we brought up with his office. Another, just as important even if it doesn’t get as much coverage here (one reason that CIA does is that neighbors continue to send us photos like these), is the double parking in front of the firehouse on Cortelyou. The potential of a stoplight at Cortelyou and Westminster, as the Councilmember has said is coming, will be a big help to improving safety there. However, the double parking still needs to be addressed, and this meeting with the DOT and the Councilmember will be an excellent opportunity for the community to come out and tell people in charge that you want them to do something about it.
