Chase Bank At 290 Flatbush Avenue To Close, Merge With Nearby Location

The Chase bank branch located at 290 Flatbush Avenue, between 7th Avenue and Prospect Place, will close in November and merge with a nearby location.

According to a letter we received in the mail from the bank, the branch will consolidate with its sister location a couple blocks up the street at 401 Flatbush Ave at the close of business on Thursday, November 6.

Earlier this year, this branch was hit by thieves who installed a card-skimming device on an ATM. Police arrested two men in the bank’s vestibule as they were retrieving the device and cameras they had mounted to the machine.

No word yet on what will happen to the commercial space at 290 Flatbush, which is fairly new.

Before this building was constructed about a decade ago, the location used to house the Carlton Theatre. It was a 1,124-seat airdome theater that was built in 1926 to replace the original theater that went up in that spot in 1911, which had an airdome theater added in 1913. According to Cinema Treasures, “The theatre had a balcony, and in its later days ran kung-fu and blaxploitation movies.”

The theater closed in the 1980s, and the space was then used by the Brooklyn Tabernacle church. The building was demolished in 2004.
