Celluloid Caskets: Amy Schumer, Liam Neeson, Anthony Bourdain Film At 4th Avenue Funeral Home [Photos]
Don’t worry, Anthony Bourdain didn’t really get run over.
Actress and comedian Amy Schumer, as well as special guests Liam Neeson and Anthony Bourdain, have been hanging out with the caskets on 4th Avenue today.
For a day, comedic satire has taken the place of the deceased and their bereaving families.
Inside Amy Schumer — a popular Comedy Central series created by and starring Schumer set up shop today at Jurek – Park Slope Funeral Home (728 4th Avenue at 23rd Street).
The series completed its third season in 2015, and is now filming for its fourth season to be aired later this Spring.
The parlor — owned and run by Funeral Director and author Doris V. Amen — has been only slightly adjusted by the film crew. The canopy temporarily bears the name “I Don’t Bury Cowards Funeral Parlor,” but much of the interior is really being used as is.
The parlor is delighfully classic. When we interviewed Amen for an article in South Slope News last November, it was clear she embraces the lore of the building, and knows it well.
“It became a funeral home in 1950. Before that, it was an old restaurant called Blue Point Bar & Grill,” she said at the time. “There weren’t a lot of funeral homes before then — as far as Catholics go. Wakes took place in the home. So the funeral director schlepped everything in there. Try to get all that up to the sixth floor of a walk-up!”
And the funeral home really feels like a home: the front room is decorated as if it were a living room, and it has the comforting smell of visiting your older relatives during the holidays.
Schumer’s presence was scarce on the set, however it was hard to tell sometimes. Her body double is more than a bit convincing.
When we spoke with producers today about the plot of this particular episode, we were told they could not discuss script details .
Actor Liam Neeson filmed a scene in the seating area that is typically used for the bereaved. Once he finished, he zipped outside in the bracing wind and darted across 4th Avenue to get food nearby.
In the midst multiple production assistants and film crew members snaking up and down the stairs, Amen — always the generous host — chats with the crew as she shoots pool downstairs just off of the casket showroom (she beat yours truly handily).
But ultimately, Amen took the famous actors in stride. “Look, you know how it goes. They die just like you and me.”
