Cell Phone Snatching, Home Break-Ins & More Recent Crimes In The 66th Precinct

A look at recent crimes reported in our area include a number of robberies where thieves got away with cell phones, several home break-ins, and more. In addition, though there were no incidents reported in this roundup, the NYPD is warning people to watch out for ATM skimming devices — the 66th Precinct found devices at two banks on 8th Avenue and another one at a gas station pump on Coney Island Avenue. To protect yourself, the precinct recommends covering the keypad when entering your PIN number.

This crime report from the 66th Precinct covers Saturday, May 10 to Wednesday, June 11, and provides a snapshot of what’s happening in its two Kensington sectors, G and K. G includes Beverley Rd to Ave F, and 37th Street to Coney Island Avenue; Sector K covers Caton Ave to Beverley Rd, and 37th Street to Coney Island Ave. The entire 66th Precinct is split into 13 sectors, lettered A-J.

The next — and last of the season — 66th Precinct Community Council Meeting is this Thursday, June 19 at 7:30pm, at the Community Board 12 office, 5910 13th Avenue in Borough Park. There will be an election of Council officers. Anyone can vote who has attended and signed in at four meetings.

East 8th Street between Ditmas & 19th Avenues
A man, 34, told police that two men dressed all in black followed him, and each carried a weapon — one showed him a firearm and the other, a knife. The thieves took his money, two iPhones, and a leather bag. The victim valued the theft at $1, 690. The victim also cut his thumb in a struggle with thieves.

A woman, 37, told police that as she was waiting for the F train, a man, 20, came up behind her with his hand in his pocket as if he had a gun. “Give me everything you got,“ the young man demanded. So, indeed, she turned over her iPhone and money, worth $205.

Ocean Parkway between Ditmas Ave & Ave F
A man followed behind two women, ages 36 and 37, as they entered their building lobby, the women reported to the police. Threatening them with a kitchen knife, the perp, 30, took their pocketbooks containing a Galaxy phone, a Coach wallet, money, and assorted credit cards and papers. The haul was worth $1,185, according to their report.

East 2nd Street between Beverly Rd & Avenue C
Five teenaged boys came up to an 18-year-old stopping him to speak. They then punched him in his face, head, and arm and took his cell phone from his pocket. The victim told police the phone was worth $200.

Albemarle Road @ Dahill Rd
Police say a man, 47, was walking home when someone hit him hard enough on the back of his head so he fell to the ground. Once down the perps took his backpack with an iPhone and sunglasses in it, worth $570.

Police say another man, 39, was also punched from behind, pushed to ground and pinned in a headlock while two teenaged boys stole his wallet, credit cards, and a Galaxy phone. Total value of the property: $859.

Two teenaged perps came up behind a woman, 28, as she was walking home and grabbed her iPhone, valued at $200, from her hands. The woman got a face bruise when the kids also tried to take her handbag, though police report they didn’t succeed with that.

Police say someone entered a woman’s apartment through a bathroom window and took two MacBook Pro computers, an iPad and a camera — a total value of $4,800.

Police say another thief gained entrance to a woman’s apartment after tampering with the locks and took her cash, a MacBook Pro computer, and jewelry, valued at a total of $2,000.

Friday, May 16, sometime between 4pm-9am the following day
East 3rd Street between Ave C & Cortelyou Rd
A woman told police someone broke into her garage and took four bicycles, valued at $1,850.

Tuesday, May 20, sometime between 1-6pm
McDonald Ave bet Ditmas Ave & Ave F
Police say someone unknown entered through the bedroom of a woman and took her cash, TV, four tablets, and Toshiba laptop, valued at a total of $5, 770.

Wednesday, May 21 between 7:30am-6:15pm
Ocean Parkway between Beverly Rd & Ave C
Three women were the victims of a burglary made through an unlocked rear bathroom window, police say. The thief took jewelry, a MacBook laptop, a guitar, and a credit card — a total value of $2,950.

Friday, May 30, sometime bet 8:30am-2:30pm
Albemarle Rd between E 4th & E 5th Streets
A burglar broke into a woman’s home through a rear window, police say. The thief made off with two Playstation game consoles, two Apple laptops, a mini iPad, cash, and jewelry. The property  has a value of $16,900 the victim told police.

Cortelyou Rd between E 4th & E 5th Streets
Police say someone took a Mac Book computer and credit cards from a woman’s apartment, climbing  in though a back window. The theft was valued at $2000.

Monday, May 12 at 8am
Church Avenue between E 4th & E 5th Streets
A woman, 46, had her wallet lifted from her purse with $200 in it, police report.

Saturday May 17, sometime between 7pm-10am the following day
E 3rd Street between Cortelyou Rd & Ditmas Ave
A man parked his 2010 Mercedes Saturday evening. Next morning when he returned at 10am there were four rims and tires missing, police say. The total value was reported at $4,500.

Sunday, May 18 between 1:30am-9:15am the following day
Ocean Parkway between Cortelyou Rd and Ditmas Ave
Another man parked his 2011 BMW at 1:30am, and the next morning he found three tires were gone. The 66th Precinct Detective Squad arrested the perp, a 20-year-old man, on Wednesday, May 28.

Church Avenue at E 4th St
Police say a man, 32, riding by on a bike, snatched a a 53-year-old woman’s necklace, and then dropped it. The woman retrieved it.

Another bike snatch: Twenty minutes later a man came riding by on a bike and grabbed a young woman’s cell phone, worth $700, police say.

Saturday, June 6, sometime between 5:30pm-12pm the following day
East 8th St between Ave C  & Cortelyou Rd
According to the police, a woman returned to the spot where she’d parked her 2014 Toyota Camry and discovered it had vanished. A day later the car was found parked by a hydrant on East 10th Street.
