Celebrate Mother’s Day in Ditmas Park

The past few days we’ve been posting Mother’s Day events and ideas as they’ve been rolling in. Here’s a round-up of where to have brunch, where to buy flowers, and unique gift ideas. Enjoy making this a Mother’s Day to remember.

Brunch
Oxcart is offering a free Mother’s Day mimosa to moms who come in for brunch.
The Farm, Picket Fence, The Castello Plan, and Mimi’s will have a regular brunch menu.
• In honor of the owner’s mother, Purple Yam is adding Pulutan to its brunch menu. Read about Dr. Solita Camara-Besa and the reason this Filipino appetizer pays homage to Mother’s Day.

Suppose you want a special brunch but not a long meal with kids in tow. Opt for one of our kid-friendly coffee shops:
• Sit down for a gourmet sandwich made from Sullivan Street bread at Café Madeline.
• Treat Mom to a brew-to-order coffee at Qathra then indulge in an Egyptian-inspired hummus sandwich.

Flowers
PS 217 is holding a plant and cupcake sale—two of my favorite things—on tomorrow morning until they sell out. Buy Mom a gift early and relax the rest of the weekend.
• Known for unique and interesting arrangements, Sycamore is selling pre-made bouquets on Saturday. $35, $50, and $75 options available.
• Stop by Foster’s Flowers on the corner of Foster and Westminster if you live on that side of the neighborhood. In fact, most of our delis sell flowers. Pick up multiple colors and varieties so you and the kids can create a unique bouquet for Mom.

Live Flowers
• Want something that last longer than a bouquet? Buy Mom an apple tree, a hanging basket in full bloom, or a pot full of blooming buds at J&L Landscaping.
•  Hodgson Farms is back at the greenmarket selling plants and flowers.  Ask the owners how and where to plant the perfect present for Mom—a gift that will last all summer. While at the greenmarket, buy fixings for a special Mother’s Day dinner. Mussels, meat, pasta, bread, and salad greens—even wine and dessert—can be bought from local farms.
• Only have a tiny patio to grow plants? Buy Mom a seat in the 2-hour class, Edibles on the Edge, sponsored by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and presented by local blogger and plant enthusiast Marie Viljeon.

Gifts
Learn to cook with neighbor Mukti Banerjee at her special Mother’s Day cooking class Friday evening.
• Our neighborhood is full of artists—painters, sculptors, photographers, knitters, musicians. Scroll through our list then contact one to purchase a photo shoot of the family, commission a portrait of your kitty cat, sign Mom up for violin lessons, or buy her a gift certificate for a local writing class.
• Tickets for the Victorian Flatbush House Tour are now available for sale. Treat Mom to a day of exploring our neighbors’ expanses.
