Celebrate Food, Art, And Community At Open Source Gallery’s Soup Kitchen

It’s almost time for the seventh annual Open Source Gallery Soup Kitchen, and the South Slope art house is on the lookout for hosts.

Starting December 1 and continuing throughout the month for as many days as they have volunteers, Open Source will invite a range of people “from neighbors to artists to others who are down on their luck or simply hungry” to a warm, free meal from 7-9pm. Food is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and all are welcome.

The gallery will provide cookware and utensils for volunteers to create a meal (traditionally a one-pot meal like soup or stew) for 15-20 people. The chef of the night must also incorporate an artistic element into the evening.

“In the past,” Open Source explains on their website, “participants have displayed photographs on the walls, transformed the space into a winter-wonderland, read monologues, or played music.”

The evening is “not a traditional soup kitchen,” they continue, “this event focuses on conversation, community, and art.”

Open Source Gallery is located at 306 17th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues. Those interested in volunteering are invited to sign up for a night online, or email contact@opensourcegallery.org for more information.
