Catch Olympic Fever with Your Neighbors
The Opening Ceremonies for the 2012 Summer Olympics are tonight, and if you’ve caught the fever, you’re not alone. We checked in with local bars to see who will be showing the games–sadly, none of them are, as of yet anyway, planning parties or Olympic-themed drinks–and it’s safe to say if there’s a TV in an establishment, the Olympics will be on.
• Sycamore tells us they’re bringing out the projector this weekend so they can screen the big events, and because of the timing, it looks like many events will be going on during the bar’s happy hour.
• Everyone else says they’ll be happy to run the games on their TVs if that’s what people want, so drop by 773 Lounge, Ox Cart, Shenanigans, or Visions if you’d like to have a drink and see what’s happening in London.
• And like we said, anyplace with a TV is probably game for the games. I passed Pablo’s in Newkirk Plaza the other day, and noticed they have a TV in there that was already showing coverage of the games.
As for who to root for, we’ve got a number of Olympians from New York–check out this summary in the Daily News. Despite all the news saying swimmer Lia Neal grew up in Flatbush, it seems that she’s from Fort Greene, but no matter which neighborhood she’s from, we’ll be rooting on the Brooklynite! She’s swimming in the 4x100m freestyle relay. The U.S. team swims the first heat tomorrow, Saturday, July 28 at 7:11am, and if they qualify for the final, that’s at 3:40pm.
