Carnem, A New American Steakhouse, To Open In Former Alta Voce Space On 5th Avenue
Fifth Avenue is about to get a bit meatier, as a new American steakhouse is set to open this spring.
The new restaurant Carnem (which means “meat” in Latin) is coming to 318 5th Avenue, between 2nd and 3rd Streets, in the space that once held the restaurant Alta Voce, and has since briefly been the temporary site of Private Picassos, a mobile art studio for families. This new space is from the same folks behind Blue Planet Grill, a Financial District pizzeria and restaurant that recently closed after its building was sold.
The kitchen will be led by chef David DiSalvo, a graduate of the French Culinary Institute who has worked at NYC restaurants Blaue Gans and Wallse, and in Southern California at West Steak and Seafood, where he earned his chops in the world of steak.
Back on the East Coast now, he’s married to a native Park Sloper and is living in Brooklyn, ready to bring us a menu that will include U.S.D.A. prime and certified angus beef products and organic and grass-fed cuts, plus fresh seafood and, according to a release, “creative interpretations of familiar favorites.”
The wine list and cocktail menu will be developed by mixologist Artemio Vasquez, who has worked at Pegu Club and with the owner of PDT.
Carnem is currently working on getting its liquor license, and is aiming to open in April.
