How We Can Help Those Affected By Hurricane Harvey

Brooklyn knows the devastation of a major storm. Many neighborhoods are still being rebuilt, 5 years on from Sandy, and our hearts go out to the residents affected by Hurricane Harvey that tore though Texas this weekend.

“Currently, the relief organizations are asking for monetary contributions and blood donations” State Senator Marty Golden says. “When faced with a catastrophe, Brooklynites have proven that they are always ready to lend a helping hand, open their wallets and provide assistance to those in need”.

Here’s how you can help.

The following is a list of organizations directly involved with the relief operation in Texas, courtesy of Golden’s office:

• American Red Cross is accepting donations online or text the word “Harvey” to 909999 to make a $10 donation.
• The Salvation Army is accepting donations online or call 1-800- SAL-ARMY.
• The United Way of Greater Houston or text UWFLOOD to 41444 to make a donation.
• Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is the primary Catholic Charities organization providing on-the-ground relief to those affected by the devastating storm.
• New York Blood Center
• Coastal Bend Volunteer Connection
• Texas Diaper Bank is providing basic assistance to babies, children with disabilities, and vulnerable seniors.
• Portlight Inclusive Disaster Strategies is a disaster response organization specifically serving individuals with disabilities.
• Austin Pets Alive is accepting and caring for pets from shelters in the direct line of Hurricane Harvey.
• Animal Rescue New Orleans is assisting both Texas and Louisiana in rescuing and sheltering displaced pets.
• Give money to food banks in Galveston, Corpus Christi and Houston.

Senator Golden and Congressman Dan Donovan’s offices will also be collecting donations to be shipped to Texas this week.

Congressman Donovan said, “As Americans, it’s our duty to help one another in their time of need. After Sandy, people from across the country donated supplies to our community. Now we can return the favor.”

Donors should drop off supplies from the following list of needs:

• Flash lights
• Batteries
• New socks
• Toiletries (e.g., tooth brushes, tooth paste, soap, contact solution)
• Diapers
• Baby formula
• Dog and cat food
• Cleaning supplies
• First-aid supplies

Opened or used materials will not be accepted. Donors can drop off supplies between 9:00AM and 5:00PM this week, August 28 to September 1.
