Burglar Breaks Into Dyker Heights Car Without Keys Or Force [Video]

A Dyker Heights resident has noticed what could be a trend in his neighborhood: thieves using a keyless hack to break into cars on 10th Avenue near 80th Street.

The neighbor told BKLYNER that his car was broken into twice this month, but without the use of force:

“It looks like the burglar had either a master key or was able to relay the signal to open the car doors…. They did not have to force the car open. I have both sets of keys so they are not lost. I spoke to neighbors and they mentioned other cars in the area have been getting broken into as well.”

On April 29 and May 13, police confirmed reports of a break-in on the same BMW 5 series. But the first time, the neighbor caught the break-in on a surveillance camera. It’s unclear whether the same person broke into the car twice, or if it was two different thieves.

Over the past 28 days, petit larceny has increased by 19 percent in the 68 Precinct compared to the same time last year, according to police data. And judging by the map, it looks like several of those cases are thefts from cars.
