Brooklyn Street To Be Named After Seth Kushner, Beloved Writer, Photographer & Sheepshead Bay Native
The New York City Council has voted to co-name a portion of Hubbard Street “Seth Kushner Way” in honor of the beloved pop culture photographer, comic writer and Sheepshead Bay native who died of leukemia earlier this year.
Seth Kushner Way is part of a bill that includes 51 thoroughfares renamed this year. The street was added to the list by City Councilman Mark Treyger.
The website Bleeding Cool reports the naming ceremony will take place on October 4th near Kushner’s childhood home at Shore Parkway and Hubbard Street.
Kushner, who passed away at his Bay Ridge Home in May at the age of 42, had a profound impact on the local creative community. He is best known for photographing comic book artists and his work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Time, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, The New Yorker, and other publishers. His book Leaping Tall Buildings: The Origins of American Comics, in which he teamed up with writer Christopher Irving to celebrate the creators of some of the world’s best-known comic book superheroes, is one of the industry’s most treasured works.
Kushner died before the publication of his semi-autobiographical graphic novel Schmuck, which features art by 22 indie cartoonists. The work was supported by fans through a Kickstarter campaign run by Kushner from his hospital bed while he battled cancer. In December, Kushner announced that he had won his fight with the disease. However, the cancer returned months later and took his life.
Kushner’s family is asking his fans and the community to support a GoFundMe account to help cover the costs of his treatment.
