Brooklyn Navy Yard Building 77 Gets $2M From Feds Added To $140M In City Funds
Ongoing renovations of Building 77 on the Brooklyn Navy Yard campus will be getting an additional $2 million in funding, this time from the federal government via the U.S. Economic Development Administration, according to U.S. Senator Charles Schumer. This funding will join an existing commitment of $140 million from the city to renovating the building to make room for more businesses and jobs in the already-strapped-for-space industrial campus.
The federal funds will be marked for renovations of two specific floors, reported the Brooklyn Daily Eagle: space that will create “move-in ready 3,000-5,000-square-foot units for small- and medium-sized businesses.”
“At 99 percent capacity, Brooklyn Navy Yard is busting at the seams, and so that is why this federal funding — which will help renovate existing buildings and attract more businesses and jobs — is so incredibly important. I am pleased that the EDA understands the importance of economic-boosting projects, like the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s Building 77, and has moved into the final stage of awarding $2 million in federal grant funds,” Schumer said.
As we reported last November, the 1 million square feet, early 20th century building, which is currently used for storage, will be fitted with additional windows as well as spaces custom designed for existing Navy Yard tenants–who are getting the first opportunities to claim a spot once construction is completed.
A 250,000 sq ft building called the Green Manufacturing Center is already underway at the yard–which, along with Building 77, will give current tenants the option to move operations to a new space should they so choose. This will in turn mean the over 100 potential tenants on the Navy Yard’s wait list may finally get a spot as well.
