Brooklyn Hospital Again Seeks A Developer For Their 240 Willoughby Street Maynard Building
Brooklyn Hospital has been trying to sell their Maynard Building, at 240 Willoughby Street, for a couple of years now, with a 2014 request for proposals (RFPs) leading to the hospital board reviewing said RFPs around this time last year.
Now, the building is on the market again, marketed by Cushman & Wakefield. The 21-story, around 151,290-square-foot, mixed-use property currently houses offices — such as for the Geriatrics Department — and labs for the Internal Medicine Department and Vascular Services, but also offers lovely views of the East River and Manhattan skyline and, if purchased, could easily be converted into a residential or mixed-use complex.
Any proceeds from a sale would enable Brooklyn Hospital to build a new ambulatory urgent care center, as well as make renovations at its main campus.
Senior VP of Strategic Planning Joan Clark also told Brooklyn Paper that “the land is already zoned for residential buildings and comes with extra air rights from the main campus.”
Any plans would be at least a couple of years away, and Clark notes that the transition would be eased by the Hospital continuing to lease space in the Maynard Building while the new developer begins construction.
Brooklyn Hospital also has ongoing efforts to double the size of their ER, which has seen increased demand and wait-times — partially because of the influx of new residents to Fort Greene, Downtown Brooklyn, and Clinton Hill, and partially as a result of Long Island College Hospital’s closure.
