Bringing The Flatbush Caton Market To The Next Level

If you have a chance, take a look at this really interesting article about the Flatbush Caton Market that appeared in Brooklyn Magazine last week.

The market is actually going to be demolished, and a new market will be built on the same site as part of a planned mixed-use development, which will also include 166 low, moderate and middle-income apartments and additional commercial space.

Construction of the new development is supposed to be completed by 2020. The market (and new development’s) site is “a busy corner in the heart of a neighborhood that served as the epicenter for Brooklyn’s Caribbean community.”

Brooklyn Magazine looks at the effort to help the almost 50 vendors in the Flatbush Caton Market successfully make the transition to a dramatically upgraded space:

“It is an immense opportunity for the vendors to bring their business to the next level, and for the community as a whole to strengthen from within; but given the market’s tumultuous history, these plans have been greeted with some anxiety. Vendors have never previously been able to trust in the permanence of their home.”

Brooklyn Magazine also pays a visit in the article to CaribBEING House, a beautiful, multipurpose art and cultural space located in the plaza of the market, that began welcoming visitors this winter.
