Briefly Noted: Demo On Bowne Building Continues, ‘Under The K’ Park, Wallaby Walk & More

After NYC DOT lifted the Stop Work Order on the S.W. Bowne Grain Storehouse last week, the developer quickly got back to work demolishing the historic structure, taking down more than half of the southern portion of the building, according to Brooklyn Daily Eagle. The Gowanus Landmarking Coalition has been fighting to preserve the 133-year-old building at 595 Smith Street while its owner reportedly wants to tear it down for a new residential development. A suspicious fire badly damaged the Red Hook building back in June 2018.

Lynne Patton, HUD’s federal administrator for New York and New Jersey, visited residents of the Red Hook Houses this week to learn about some of the issues plaguing their apartments. Residents of the 32-building, 1,400+ unit NYCHA complex showed her peeling paint as well as damaged lighting fixtures and electrical wires in their homes, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reports. Patton also toured NYCHA’s Fenimore Lefferts Houses in PLG/East Flatbush back in March.
The new Kosciuszko Bridge will open to traffic on Thursday and will feature nine lanes for cars, a 20-foot-wide bicycle and pedestrian path, and an elaborate lighting system that will be illuminated at night, according to the Daily News. “Under the K,” a new seven-acre public park will debut underneath the Brooklyn side of the bridge next summer.

Bed-Stuy residents shot a video of their neighbor walking a wallaby on the street last week. Though they are adorable, the marsupials are illegal to keep as pets in New York City. The locals who shared the video with Patch say they hope the wallaby will be taken to an animal sanctuary.
After closing on 5th Avenue in August 2017, Dizzy’s Diner recently launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise cash to renovate its 9th Street location which has been in business since 1997. The fundraiser has so far collected just under $2,000 of its $20,000 goal.
