Brooklyn bookworms have been waiting patiently for the arrival of Emma Straub‘s Books Are Magic bookstore to Cobble Hill.

Filling the indie bookstore void, the Brooklyn-based author Straub and her graphic designer husband, Michael Fusco-Straub, will open Books Are Magic on or around May 1 at 225 Smith Street between Butler and Douglass Streets.

Straub announced her plans to open the new shop in February to much fanfare, shortly following the closing of the 35-year-old, beloved BookCourt at the end of last year.

Just your average girl crying on the sidewalk on NYE. BookCourt was my homebase for a lot of years. Work, pleasure, what’s the difference? I loved it, always. Tonight was the staff party. I stole a book of poems and had to drag myself out the door. It feels not unlike my parents selling my childhood home, only i didn’t have to watch my parents’ home become something else. We’re buying lots of shelves, and hoping to have a place to put them soon, but it won’t be BookCourt, and I’m sad. ?

Straub, a former BookCourt employee and fan, has acquired the store’s old wooden shelves  — which she will fill with titles she loves, including Sarah Gerard’s Sunshine State and Michael Hearst’s Curious Constructions, as well as more obscure books, according to New York Magazine.

Books Are Magic is currently hiring staff, booking events, and ordering books.
