Give Lifesaving Blood in Brooklyn This June—List of Donor Locations Inside!

This summer, the New York Blood Center is in desperate need of donors, to the tune of 1,500 more per month. The situation is dire enough that the center has declared a “blood emergency” in New York.

Residents are urged to make a donation if at all possible, as the seven-day reserves of lifesaving blood and blood products have dipped below the minimum and need to be replenished.

In Brooklyn, potential donors can make appointments online to visit the New York Blood Center location downtown, at 120 Lawrence Street, off Willoughby.

While the downtown location may not be the most convenient stop for many Brooklynites, it is located near just about every transit option available: right around the corner from the Jay Street-Metrotech A/C/F and N/R stops, plus a short walk from the Borough Hall 4/5, the Hoyt Street 2/3 and the Hoyt-Schermerhorn G. Even the DeKalb Avenue B/Q isn’t more than a few blocks from the Blood Center!

Of course, there’s also plenty of blood drives happening this month—you can donate almost anywhere in Brooklyn this June:

With plenty of folks vacationing now that school is out and summer Fridays are in full effect, the amount of donors is lower than ever—but hospitals and trauma centers still need blood and platelets!

“Every single day, blood donations help save lives—and right now, the need is critical,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Donor Recruitment for New York Blood Center. “We’re calling on everyone to do what they can to spread the word, host a blood drive or simply take an hour out of their day to donate.”

The need for blood coincides with World Blood Day, which is this Thursday, June 14. Part of a global public health campaign by the World Health Organization, World Blood Day has served for more than a decade “to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary, life-saving gifts of blood.”

How You Can Help:

  • Donate blood or platelets at a donor center.
  • Donate at a mobile blood drive.
  • Host a blood drive in your community or at your organization.
  • Educate others in your family, community, and organization about blood donations, and encourage them to donate themselves and/or host a blood drive.
  • Promote the need for blood donors on social media.
