Bite Of The Day: Wheated’s Brussel Sprout Salad
Artisanal pizza joint Wheated (905 Church Avenue) is well-known for its uniquely topped pizzas named after various Brooklyn neighborhoods and tasty sourdough crust — and recently listed as one of the 50 best restaurants in Brooklyn by Fodor’s — but we were surprised to find on a recent visit that they also have a delicious Brussel Sprout salad.
It might seem odd to grab a salad at a pizza joint but the Brussel Sprout Salad for $9 is worth it. The dish mixes shredded Brussel sprouts with dried cranberries, crushed hazelnuts, Pecorino-Romano cheese, fresh lemon and olive oil dressing, creating a tangy and flavorful treat.
We love the mix of tart sweetness of the cranberries with the slightly sour flavor of the sprouts and lemon juice. Then add to that the small bits of hazelnuts, which really help balance the dish out. It’s one of the more interesting ways we’ve seen Brussel sprouts served and our new go-to starter.
And if you happen to end up at Wheated with someone who would rather have a basic pepperoni slice than any of the interesting combinations the pizza joint is known for, you are in luck. The Sunset Park pie ($15) is basically an upscale version of the standard pepperoni and cheese pizza. It comes with hot sopressata, tomato sauce, fresh and aged mozzarella and Parmigiano-Reggiano and after trying it, we may never want a regular pepperoni slice again.
Want to spice it up a bit? Try the house-made sriracha or spicy honey sauces for some added heat.
Wheated, located at 905 Church Avenue between Coney Island Avenue and East 10th Street, is open from 6pm-12am Tuesday through Thursday, 6pm-1am Fridays and Saturdays, and 5pm-11pm on Sundays.
