Bite Of The Day: Vegan Blueberry Cinnamon Muffin At Coffee Mob

We heard last week that Coffee Mob (1514 Newkirk Ave at E 16th St) started carrying organic vegan and gluten-free baked goods from Clementine Bakery, and since then we’ve been curious to try them. Coffee Mob usually orders brownies and muffins, and owner Buck Berk says the bakery, on the cusp of Clinton Hill and Bed Stuy, has been completing their order with whatever new and exciting things they’ve whipped up.

“One day they’ll walk in and it’s blueberry and cinnamon,” he says, “and the next it’s raspberry and lavender.” He says they like to change the ingredients up, so if you want to try something new pretty regularly, this might be a good place to find it–just make sure, if you have allergies, to ask about what’s inside.

Out of the three options still available when we got to the cafe this morning, we chose the blueberry-cinnamon muffin (though the fudge brownie and banana-peanut butter cookie looked pretty stupendous, too). Nothing tasted glaringly like you might expect “vegan” or “gluten-free” to taste. The muffin was delicious and juicy and beautiful, if not the easiest to eat gracefully.

While we were there, Buck said that alongside the new pastries,  Coffee Mob is serving single origin Guatemalan coffee from their regular roaster, Toby’s Estate, for a limited time. Their El Pilar Guatemala, which Buck describes as sweet and tart, just won a blind taste test competition with Craft Coffee–who then bought the majority of the beans, so you’re going to have to hurry and check it out in drip or cold brew form while you can.

The vegan treats run from $3.50 to $4, with the single origin cold brew on special for $3.50. If you’d rather stick with the regular house blend, though, it’s still available as non-cold brew iced coffee.
