Bite Of The Day: Lunch Specials At Black Forest Brooklyn

It’s been nearly a month since Black Forest Brooklyn launched their new Mittagstisch Lunch Specials menu and we’ve already forgotten what lunch was like without this fantastic, affordable option. As owners Ayana and Tobias explained in the March 29 announcement, Mittagstisch is “a German tradition, a quick and inexpensive lunch, a different dish for every weekday. Guten Appetit!”

For $5.99 plus tax, you can get a different meal every day of the week, from Wednesday’s Vegetable and Potato Stew with Garlic Roll (sausage stripes are an extra $3) and Thursday’s Baked Potato with Carrots, Eggplant and Mint Yogurt Sauce (add pulled chicken for $3) to Friday’s choice of Leek Quiche or German Meatloaf on a roll with salad, fries or soup.

Thus far, we have only been able to make it out on Mondays for the Mushroom Goulash with Rice (add pork stripes for $3), but it sort of epitomizes the simplicity and heartiness of Black Forest’s entire menu, including the new lunch menu. The pile of meaty mushrooms and tomatoes sits atop a giant bed of rice, perfect for soaking up the sauce and encouraging diners to savor every bite (or scarf down the entire plate, as we’ve admittedly done).

Pair the meal with one of 14 classic German beers on tap or the carefully curated list of wines, coffees and teas; with that many options, there’s something for everyone and every dish.

Verdict: The lunch specials are available from 10am-4pm every weekday, which is plenty of time to even order a second helping! With Black Forest’s weekday brunch specials, you also have that option for dining companions who are craving eggs or a delicious bowl of soup (ask for the soup of the day).
