Bite Of The Day: Ensaimada At Coffee Mob, Via Purple Yam

Here’s a delicious Ditmas Park collaboration! Coffee Mob (1514 Newkirk Avenue on the corner of E 16th Street) is now serving ensaïmada made exclusively for them by Romy  Dorotan of Purple Yam.

Made from rich butter and egg batter, the Gouda cheese-filled pastries (originally from Majorca, Spain, but also popular in the Phillipines) are topped with granulated sugar to bridge the gap between a few of the most delectable food groups on Earth.

“One time Romy stopped by for a coffee and mentioned that he loves to bake,” says Coffee Mob owner Buck Berk. “I explained that customers had been requesting a pastry with cheese in it, and he asked if I’d like to try his ensaïmada. We offered it to our customers, it sold out rapidly. So we decided to continue it as a weekend special.”

The Ensaimada is $3.50, and Buck says your best chance of catching it is late on weekend mornings.
