Bite Of The Day: Colorful Bagels From John's

If you ask me, the only thing that makes a regular baked good better is an unusual color. Purply blueberry muffins? Check. Chocolate chip cookies tinted green for Saint Patrick’s Day? They’re just more fun that way! So, the bright-colored bagels at John’s Bakery (1322 Cortelyou Road on the corner of Rugby Road) have been of interest ever since noticing them during that whole sandwich competition with Captain Breakfast a while back.

Pink is jalapeno, and green is veggie–both of which are handy when, say, you’re taking them home to fix up and you don’t want to buy multiple exotic cream cheese varieties. The veggie bagel has herbs and hunks of carrot right in the dough, and the pink has a sort of pepper reminiscence without being overly spicy.

Other exceptional things about today’s bagel experience include the always-friendly service and good neighborly chit chat in John’s, and the price–where it seems like most if not all of the other bagels with cream cheese in the ‘hood are at least $2, John’s are $1.75. Two bagels and a large coffee this morning came out to only $5.
