Bite Of The Day: Apple Turnover At Colson Patisserie
As the leaves change color and the air outside gets more and more chilly, our snacking urges tend toward fall flavors — warm cinnamon-spiced treats, pumpkin everything, and of course, lots and lots of apples.
And so this is just the time of year when we make a beeline for pastries at Colson Patisserie. While many people now know the bakery because the mayor can’t stop talking about it (or officiating the marriages of its baristas), sweets fans in the neighborhood have been enjoying their doughnuts, waffles, muffins, tarts, and more since this space opened in 2006. And though the apple turnover ($3.25) is popular enough to be available year-round, there’s something perfectly autumnal about it that makes it impossible to resist in November.
The perfectly tender and flaky turnover is packed with an apple filling that’s not over-pureed, but is has been cooked down enough to make the apple flavor come across fully. Like so many of their pastries, this one is not too sweet, and is just the kind of thing you want to savor a while as you drink a latte while sitting on the bench outside of the space, bundled up in a scarf and watching people pass by.
