Bite Of The Day: Oreo Red Velvet Cake From A Piece Of Velvet

Bite Of The Day: Oreo Red Velvet Cake From A Piece Of Velvet

Perhaps it’s not such a concern in your version of an adult life, but we’ve found this issue with the majority of friends’ birthday parties in recent years: a distinct lack of cake. Plenty of booze, slightly too much spent on late cab rides home because this or that train is being FasTracked, and an obscene amount of karaoke, yes–but without question, a shortage in the cake department.

The nice thing about adulthood, of course, is that nobody can stop you from buying or eating cake even when it’s not someone’s birthday. So, it’s possible we may have stopped by A Piece of Velvet (708A Fulton Street between South Oxford Street and South Portland Avenue) last night for a slice. You know, just to even the whole birthday thing out.

At $6, slices at A Piece of Velvet aren’t cheap–but they will feed the family. We got a heavy, dense, moist piece of beautifully bright red velvet cake slathered with Oreo frosting (that creamy magic in the middle of the two cookies, plus mini chocolate chips), and were unable to finish it between two people. It might be the ideal solution for the red velvet haters we know, who insist chocolate is the only way to go–turns out, you can enjoy both in one slice! And in a similar revelation, contrary to what the proverb may say, A Slice of Velvet’s hulking slices make it completely feasible to have your cake and eat it too.

For now we just have to say, we can’t remember having cake this good at any parties growing up–and we’re awfully glad to have A Piece of Velvet right within reach. If you’re left unsatisfied after your next friend’s birthday blowout (and don’t worry if you’re not into the Oreo thing–they’ve got something like 20 variations on red velvet cake), you can stop by the shop from 9am-10pm any day of the week.
