Bite Of The Day: Lunch At Burger UrWay

It’s not easy to find a good, quick, cheap but not cheaply-made burger nowadays, even with the proliferation of sandwich and burger joints in Brooklyn. But there are always hidden gems and reliable standbys to be found, especially in neighborhoods like Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, where small businesses old and new bump elbows. So when I noticed the lunch special sign in the window of Burger UrWay (358 Myrtle Avenue, at the corner of Adelphi Street), I didn’t get my hopes up.

As it was a Thursday, I ordered the Turkey Burger Lunch Special ($5.99; normally $9.49 for the burger + fries + drink), which came with my choice of toppings, plus fries and a fountain drink. Among the free toppings, I went for lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and red onions, plus southwestern sauce. There are also extra-cost toppings such as Angus beef chili, bacon, avocado and a fried egg. Since I’m a fan of eggs, I added one, as well, bringing my total up to $7.49.

The service was quick and you can see them cook and add toppings to the homemade turkey patty in front of you. In the time it took me to fill up my soda cup, they had already gotten halfway through preparing my order, so not bad.

Everything came in a sturdy white cardboard take-out container (you can also choose to eat-in, as there are a couple of diner-style tables in the small restaurant) that holds up quite well.

The turkey patty was decently meaty and moist, the southwestern sauce gave it a nice kick, and the bun may not have looked remarkable, but was soft and lightly toasted. The fried egg wasn’t as watery as I’d like, so I wouldn’t add that next time, but the medium-sized pile of fries (what you see above was after I had already snatched a couple of them) was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside — an improvement over chain fast food fries.

According to Yelp reviews, the bacon cheeseburger with avocado mayo and/or BBQ sauce is also pretty good, and their shakes seem to get mentioned repeatedly as an enjoyable option.

Verdict: Good lunch option and a lot of variety. I’m curious how the Maryland Crab Cake, wings, and chili are, so I might go back to try those on a Wednesday and Sunday. You can also order via Seamless or by phone, which makes Burger UrWay even more convenient.
