Bite Of the Day: On The Go With The General Greene’s Kiosk, Fort Grace
We live in a fast-paced world that not even snowstorms, subway delays, and buried cars can stop, so sometimes the only thing we have time for in the morning is a cup of coffee and a danish from the sidewalk vendor. Fortunately, one local sidewalk kiosk kicks the whole vendor thing up a notch.
The General Greene‘s corner kiosk, Fort Grace, is located on the Clermont side of its 229 DeKalb Avenue restaurant, looking like a no-frills stop-and-go place while also being more than a hole in the wall. Basically, it’s like our childhood dreams of a fort-kitchen mashup, only with better food.
On the menu are hot drinks, baked goods, and ice cream and sorbets — even in the winter. There’s always something savory or sweet available like an egg and cheese biscuit, banana bread, peanut butter cookie, or chocolate coconut muffin, along with daily specials depending on what comes out of the oven.
We particularly enjoyed the brioche cinnamon bun ($3), which was warm and soft, yet not falling apart and messy. The cinnamon on top had a good texture and wasn’t annoyingly hard like a lot of icings can be.
Then wash it all down with one of the many teas ($2.25), coffees ($2.25/$3.75) or drinks like hot chocolate ($2.25).
The weather wasn’t conducive to us trying the homemade ice creams (one scoop for $3, two scoops for $5), but flavors available range from the traditional (chocolate, vanilla, strawberry) to the specialty and seasonal (persimmon, coffee toffee chip, pumpkin spice). There are also fruit sorbets in flavors such as pear and grapefruit with campari.
Just in time for the hopeful return of spring!
