The Bite: Brunch At Bar Basic

PARK SLOPE – Looking for a new weekend brunch spot? Bar Basic (71 7th Ave) is a charming eatery that serves up tasty brunch standards in cozy environs.

Opened at the end of 2017 by the owners of the burger-and-sandwich joint Gnarly Eats (447 7th Ave), Bar Basic offers Southern comfort and American dining, using seasonal, local, consciously-sourced ingredients in their burgers, gumbo, po boys, buttermilk chicken with waffles, and much more.

Their weekend brunch is offered as a prix fixe—$17 no alcohol, $22 with a brunch cocktail (Bloody Mary, Bellini, mimosa, sangria). Among the brunch entrees are an Avocado BLT, Adult Grilled Cheese, Buttermilk Pancakes, Banana Waffles, Pecan Pie French toast, and a Buttermilk Fried Chicken Burger.

I ordered the Eggs Benedict sans the BBQ pulled pork with a side of sweet potato home fries served in a mini cast-iron skillet. The two poached eggs on an English muffin were topped with hollandaise sauce, shiitake mushrooms, and spinach. The mushrooms were a unique touch and provided a heartiness and flavor that would likely have been enhanced with the addition of the pulled pork (as listed on the menu).

The Basic Burger

My brunch date ordered the Basic Burger made with a chuck-and-sirloin blend topped with a house sauce, pickled cabbage, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onion, all tucked into a potato bun. Since Bar Basic is owned by the folks behind Gnarly Eats, they know a thing or two about burgers, and my brunch date savored every bite, including the generous garden salad that came on the side.

While the service was friendly, it was a little slow—especially since we were in a bit of a rush. It was no fault of the servers. When we first arrived at 11am on a Saturday morning, there was only one server, which was fine since there were only three tables. But soon the brunch crowd began streaming in, and even after a second server arrived at noon, the hungry crowd seemed almost too much for just the two of them.

With wooden tables and long benches dotted with pillows, string lights, potted plants, exposed brick, and a chalkboard wall, Bar Basic, so long as you’re not in a hurry, is a charming place to relax and enjoy a meal or a few drinks.
