Bhoomki Home Brings Ethically-Manufactured Furnishings & More To 5th Avenue
A new home furnishings shop from the woman behind an established local clothing boutique opened this month on 5th Avenue, bringing sustainable designs to the neighborhood just in time for the holidays.
Swati Argade, the powerhouse behind Bhoomki (158 5th Avenue), has expanded her business with a new venture just a couple blocks away. Bhoomki Home opened on December 6 at 237 5th Avenue, and it’s a space that carries over the same environmental and social consciousness, but with a focus on home goods.
“We’ve been listening to you, lovely loyal customers,” Argade wrote on her website prior to the opening. “You’ve supported us and inspired us and have been asking us for a home furnishings store.”
While Bhoomki has carried some items for the home, this new space, which has twice the square footage of the other shop, gives them the opportunity to share a wider selection of items from companies they love.
“In the fashion store, she’s able to dabble, carry a piece or two of certain items,” says Bhoomki Home brand manager Johanna Perry, who points to the larger baskets by Swahili Imports, which the other shop has occasionally had one or two of, while the new space has a wide range. “She can do a little home accent here or there. But here we can do a full spread. We’re able to go much deeper into some of these brands that she’s known for a long time, and a deeper breadth of their products,” she notes, pointing to the rugs by the same company, which they’ve never been able to carry previously.
So far, Perry says the neighborhood has welcomed the new shop with open arms, and has provided great feedback.
“We’ve had such a great reception,” she says. “[Argade] has a really loyal customer base, and they’ve been super supportive and exicted for us. And everyone who comes in who doesn’t know about Bhoomki already is also excited, because there has been something of a void.”
The neighborhood has also been shopping — a lot of stock has already been sold. They’re working on restocking the popular items, like glass tumblers and hand-blown, feather-filled ornaments from Roost, but Perry says there are still a lot of items for anyone on the hunt for a special present.
Perry recommends their selection of blankets and throws from Canvas Home, Coyuchi, and more, which people have been picking up as gifts, but they do still have a number of options. “You’ll just want to snuggle for hours,” she says. And if you need something to rest your head on, she points to some beautiful pillows woven right here in the neighborhood by Hart Made.
If you’re looking for something small, Perry recommends the collection of Craftspring ornaments handmade by women artisans in Kyrgyzstan. “They have an amazing story behind them, and they’re just gorgeous” she says.
They also carry a selection of jewelry, from some of the artists that you may recognize from Bhoomki, plus candles, dishes, notecards, and more, and they’ll be adding things and changing things up along the way, depending on what neighbors are interested in seeing.
Perry, who previously worked in merchandising at Saks and got to know Argade initially just as a customer, tells us she’s excited to be a part of what Bhoomki is doing.
“I have passion for sustainable design, less for luxury retail,” she says. “It’s an obvious way to go if you want to save the world like I do.”
Bhoomki Home is located at 237 5th Avenue, between President and Carroll Streets. Hours are Monday-Friday 11am-7:30pm, Saturday 11am-7pm, and Sunday 12-7pm.
