Bensonhurst Native Scissura Possibly Next Borough President
Borough President Marty Markowitz protege Carlo Scisurra’s name is currently being floated as a possible successor to Brooklyn’s top political slot. According to an article by Harold Egeln in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Scisurra, a Bensonhurst native, Dyker Heights resident, lawyer and our current BP’s chief of staff, could be a shoe in.
Chris Bragg, in a City Hall News story from last week not only echoed Markowitz’s pledge to support Scisurra, but also made it known that two other possible contenders, Deputy BP Yvonne Graham and Coucilman Domenic Recchia, will most likely not be joining the race.
According to the Brooklyn Eagle piece, Scissura’s “wide and varied professional and grassroots political experience” goes way back.
From the Eagle:
Scissura’s government and political experience includes being communications director for state Sen. Vincent Gentile (now a councilman); legal consultant for the state Assembly and Senate, serving on the City Charter Revision Commission in 2010, and a member of Community Board 11, representing Bensonhurst and Bath Beach.
A leader in education, Scissura served on Community School Board 20 beginning in 1999, serving as a vice president and chair of its Drug and Alcohol Abuse Committee. He was appointed in 2004 by Markowitz to the District 20 Community Education Council, serving as its legislative committee chair. When the city’s Board of Education was terminated in July 2009, Scissura served briefly on a temporary board until mayoral control was established with the Department of Education.
Scissura serves on the boards of the Brooklyn Public Library, the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation and the NYC Economic Development Corporation. He also serves as vice president of the Federation of Italian-American Organizations.
Among his honors are the 2011 Good Scout Award at the Boy Scouts Brooklyn Council’s recent Bay Ridge Scouting Breakfast, the 2007 Ragamuffin Parade Committee’s Man of the Year, and the 2007 Man of the Year at Borough Hall’s Italian-American Cultural Celebration.
He is a graduate of Our Lady of Guadeloupe School in Dyker Heights and Xaverian High School in Bay Ridge. He graduated from Pace University with a BA in political science with honors and a JD degree from Pace University’s School of Law. He also studied international law at the University of London.
