Art Events To Check Out This Week
It’s almost hump day.
Break out of your weeknight routine rut and check out some of the cool events scheduled for the middle of this week!
Hooligan Sparrow
When: Wednesday, April 5 at 7:30pm
Where: BAM Rose Cinemas, Peter Jay Sharp Building, 30 Lafayette Avenue, Fort Greene
What: Long Island University’s 68th Annual George Polk Awards and BAMcinematek are screening Hooligan Sparrow, the George Polk Documentary Film Award winner about the Chinese women’s rights activist Ye Haiyan’s (the “Hooligan Sparrow”) fight for justice for six schoolgirls abducted and sexually assaulted by their principal in 2013. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the film’s director, Nanfu Wang.

Jackie Robinson & Brooklyn Dodgers Memorabilia Pop-Up Exhibit
When: Wednesday, April 5, 3pm to 4:30pm
Where: National Grid, One MetroTech Center, Downtown Brooklyn
What: Join the Brooklyn Historical Society, National Grid, and St. Francis College in celebrating the legacy of Jackie Robinson at the launch of a pop-up exhibit featuring Robinson and Brooklyn Dodgers memorabilia, such as a Dodgers Helmet, autographed baseball, and signed programs. Former MLB Player and New York Mets Hall of Famer, Mookie Wilson, will speak at the event.
“It Takes Us” Photographs and Stories of Gun Violence Across America
When: Thursday, April 6, 6:30pm to 8:30pm
Where: WeWork, 81 Prospect Street (between Jay and Pearl Streets), DUMBO
What: WeWork is hosting an exhibition of the work of documentary photographer Joe Quint, which illustrates the impact of gun violence on survivors and the families of victims. The artist will be joined by families affected by gun violence as well as by local gun violence prevention advocates.
Flatbush Junction Community Art Walk
When: Thursday, April 6, 6pm to 9pm
Where: Hillel Place, Flatbush
What: Intersection@The Junction unites business owners and local artists to create art installations that put Flatbush Junction center stage. This free event begins with a campaign documentary screening, an exhibit of portraits of the participating local business owners, live music, and refreshments. Storefront Art Guides will be available for visitors to locate all the art on display along Hillel Place and Flatbush Avenue.
Shona Sculpture Sale Opening Cocktail Reception
When: Thursday, April 6, 6pm to 9pm
Where: CAMBA Shona Gallery, 19 Winthrop Street, Prospect-Lefferts Garden
What: Since 1991, CAMBA has showcased an extensive collection of Shona sculptures that reflect the deeply held spiritual beliefs and folklore of Zimbabwe’s largest ethnic group. With over 650 works and prices ranging from $25 to $15,000, guests can purchase an original piece of art by a Shona artist. Proceeds help to fund CAMBA’s services for 45,000 New Yorkers in need.

What For? Why Not?

Where: Triskelion Arts’ Muriel Schulman Theater, 106 Calyer Street (enter on Banker Street), Greenpoint
What: Folk-soul singer Jason Walker will address the question: Why do we obey laws written for our own destruction? Estonian artist, Jaanika Peerna, light installation artist, Christine Sciulli, and Chinese opera star, Qian Yi, collaborate using drawing, light, and voice to create an environment in constant flux.
