Graduating seniors and college students, take note! There’s a summer internship program with great networking and work skills opportunities available right in your own backyard.

Applications are due by Friday, May 29 for the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC)s Summer Internship Program, which runs from Monday, June 29 through Friday, August 21. According to Richard Drucker, senior vice president of external affairs:

“The Summer Internship Program will give college students who live locally an opportunity to get real work experience, exposure to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, become familiar with the industrial sector and have an opportunity to earn a salary in the summer that may supplement their college cost.”

Internships are with various participating businesses in the Yard; a list has not yet been finalized, but Yard tenants include furniture makers, artists and photographers, as well as film studios, construction companies, publishing companies, and even a rooftop farm.

“BNYDC will interview and hire qualified college students for opportunities with businesses in the Yard that agree to host a summer intern. Students must be at least 18 years old and be able to present documentation that they are currently enrolled in a college program or have been admitted to college. . .You must complete an application to be considered. There are limited internship opportunities; applications should be sent in as early as possible.
“All applicants will have an opportunity to be interviewed. There will be a mandatory orientation session, hosted by BNYDC for all applicants that are chosen for the program. The students will work a 35 hour workweek with a one hour unpaid lunch break each day.
Navy Yard businesses will provide the student with a meaningful work experience. Students are expected to demonstrate exceptional work ethic and professionalism at all times while employed by BNYDC. The employer at the end of the program will assess the students.”
