Some of you heard helicopters flying over the northwest corner of Fort Greene Park on Friday night (December 11) shortly after 8pm and wondered what was going on. Well, as we noted on Facebook, it was an NYPD copter deployed after shots were fired and police chased a suspect in and around the Walt Whitman Houses.

The latest shooting began at 7:55pm when PSA 3 housing police officers who were on patrol in a marked police van heard shots fired near Park Avenue and Cumberland Walk. When they went on foot to investigate, they reportedly observed an armed young man running south on Cumberland Walk, jumping over a fence. Then, “as the officers approached the suspect, one of the officers discharged his weapon striking the suspect in his left shoulder.”

The 20-year-old suspect was taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment and is in stable condition.  Police said “a Kel Tec .9mm semi-automatic gun was later recovered at the scene and charges are pending.”
