Afternoon Bite: Chicken Soup From Metropolitano

My grandmommie is known far and wide for her homemade chicken soup, and after nine years in South Slope, we’ve finally discovered a restaurant that succeeds in transporting us back to the mouthwatering smells and tastes of her Garland, Texas kitchen.

The chicken soup ($4.50 for a small and $8 for a large) at Metropolitano (133 17th Street and 3rd Avenue) pulls out all the stops with huge chunks of chopped carrot, potato, onion, and celery. There are both noodles and rice (on the side), plus big pieces of juicy chicken (still on the bone), all swimming in a savory broth.

We ordered the small serving, and it was more than enough for one person (leftovers are sitting in the fridge as we type). If you’re looking to share, definitely go for the large, otherwise the small should suffice.

We also gave Metropolitano’s beef and chicken empanadas a whirl, and though they were tasty, we still prefer the empanada lady on 5th Avenue and 13th Street.

Metropolitano is located at 133 17th Street and 3rd Avenue. Hours are 10am to 10pm daily. Credit cards are accepted, and online delivery is available via Seamless and GrubHub ($10 minimum).
