After 40 Years, Hair Fair By Alberto Is Moving Across The Street

Hair Fair by Alberto, the salon that has been at 684 5th Avenue, between 20th and 21st Streets, for about 40 years, will be moving across the street by the end of the year.

As many of these stories go, Hair Fair is closing this location because of an increase in rent that’s too much for it to handle — but fortunately in this case, owner Alberto Maratea purchased the building across the street at 681 5th Avenue in the 1980s, so he can continue cutting hair just a few dozen yards from where he’s been doing so for decades.

As for that iconic sign above the shop, a relic of a time before awnings took over most of our streets? That’s not making the move.

“It’s very old,” Alberto said. “And it’s time for a change.”
