About
Bklyner is about Brooklyn first and foremost, and is currently an irregular newsletter that goes out to about 25,000 subscribers when the news warrant it, written by Liena Zagare, who also writes The Bigger Apple, Manhattan Institute’s newsletter at the intersection of politics and policy. Email her at editor@bklyner.com.
Bklyner started as a network of neighborhood news sites, some established as far back as 2008, and grew to include the following: Bensonhurst Bean (2011), Ditmas Park Corner (2012), Fort Greene Focus (2009), KensingtonBK (2012), Sheepshead Bites (2008), South Slope News (2013), and Sunset Park Voice(2016). In January 2017, they were all consolidated in one site, Bklyner. Bklyner went on pause in September 2021, following two grueling years covering the pandemic, serving almost 500,000 readers a month. It resumed as a newsletter-first publication in 2022.
Fort Greene Focus began its life in 2009 as The Local, published by the New York Times, and then the CUNY Journalism School ran the site as “The Nabe” in 2013 and 2014.
We are funded through subscriptions from our readers, as well as advertising from local businesses and institutions. You can read more about our work in this piece from The Atlantic: Who’s Left Covering Brooklyn With the Big Newspapers in Retreat?
