A Plea for Better Halloween Decor

What scares you?

Let’s face it. Store bought Halloween decorations often come off as cookie cutter. The R.I.P. graves, the skeletons, the cartoon witch poster on the door… they serve a purpose, to be sure, letting kids planning a trick-or-treat route know that’s where they’ll get the good candy. But how about something that looks good, too?

The best holiday decorations, like the best halloween costumes, are homemade. This artfully ripped sheet at 500 4th Street gets more done than the plastic spiders and fake skulls populating this stoop. For one thing, it evokes Park Slope past. It’s genuine. And kind of creepy, in a sweet way.
