Walt Whitman Library is going to be open on Saturdays for the first time in years and library fans know that that is a cause for celebration.

Cue a day filled with educational games, story times, food, fun, and more this Saturday, October 24, courtesy of community volunteers from the nascent Friends of Walt Whitman Library and the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL).

“I remember as a little girl it opening on Saturday and it was the biggest thing for me. It’s very sad that children around here didn’t have that,” said Darcelle Williamson, a long-time resident and library patron. “There’s such a need for children to read more, have book clubs and other reading programs. Us parents are always trying to think of games like old-fashioned spelling bees and Diary of a Wimpy Kid Day. We’re looking forward to Saturday service. We just hope the community comes out.”

On the agenda for Saturday are a 3-Cubed robotics presentation from 12:30-1:30pm, followed by an origami workshop by Taro Origami for kids and adults from 1:30-2:30pm. There will also be an introduction to “Tanki” computer gaming from 1-2pm, as well as storytime and a Halloween figure mobile craft class.

Sponsors for the event include NYPD, FDNY, LIU Brooklyn, Red Apple, Bravo, CRCS, P.S. 67, and P.S. 46.

Williamson and other volunteers will also have a survey for neighbors to fill out listing what you’d like to see in the library. Recent additions include a designated children’s librarian, moving of the children’s bathroom up to the main floor, and more youth programming.

Let’s get this party started!
