70th Precinct Meeting: Domestic Violence Up, Shootings Down, Promotion For CO Palumbo

Over the past 28-day period, overall reported crimes are down in the 70th precinct, compared to the same time period last year, with the notable exception of felony assaults most of which are related to domestic abuse cases, according to the precinct’s commanding officer.

Felony assault, which involves the use of weapons, has increased by 40 percent; 21 cases up from 15 from last year, and mostly attributed to domestic violence, said Palumbo.

“The felony assaults are mostly domestic related in nature, and that’s not unusual,” said Captain James Palumbo at last night’s 70th Precinct Community Council meeting. The precinct plans to reach out to victims of domestic abuse and offer services available, including possible relocation.

The number of shooting incidents has dropped to 4, down from 12 from the same period last year; and the number of shooting victims decreased by 80 percent. Palumbo announced that if this trend continues there could be a record reduction of violence for the year in the 70th precinct.

Overall reported crime dropped 12 percent over the past 28-day period. Some notable exceptions to this positive trend are robberies, felony assaults, and cases of grand larceny. The number of robberies are up to 19, compared to 18 from last year, mostly attributed to theft of electronics and one home invasion, said Palumbo.

Cases of grand larceny auto have also increased around Stratford Road and Westminster Road near Ditmas Avenue. Nissan Ultima models are being targeted city-wide for perpetrators breaking into vehicles and stealing property. These categories spiked two weeks ago, Palumbo reported, but then decreased again in the following three to four weeks.

Palumbo also announced a long term violence investigation targeting gang activity in the northern part of the precinct, near East 18th Street and Caton Avenue. The Eight Tray Cowboy Cryps, with gang members ranging from 14 to 26 years old, have been involved in shootings and robberies in all parts of the precinct. 70th Precinct officials met with homeland security to pursue a federal prosecution.
