66th Precinct Stationed On East 7th St To Prevent Car Break-Ins?

Last month, KensingtonBK noted the recent rise of car break-ins in the 66th Precinct, whose border is the west side of Coney Island Avenue. At the time, the number of break-ins had risen 28.6% from last year, and the NYPD and Shomrim volunteers were zeroing in on the area to prevent more incidents.

Now, with the end of the yellow bus strike, it seems as if the 66th might be dedicating more of their resources to the break-ins. A neighbor writes:

There’ve been at least two police vans stationed in my neck of the woods for the past couple weeks… one at Cortelyou and E. 7th and one at Ditmas and E. 7th.
I just asked one of the cops what the deal is, and he said that they have been stationed there to help protect against the rash of car break-ins going on lately.
There were a few weeks recently when there were tons and tons of break-ins. Every morning we’d come out to broken glass.

As of the precinct’s most recent CompStat report, there have been 25 complaints of grand larceny auto so far in 2013.

Other residents have reported noticing unmarked police cars stationed on E 7th St as well. Hopefully, future CompStat reports will show consistent police presence lessening the number of break-ins in the area.

We have reached out to the 66th Precinct for confirmation, but have not heard back.

If you see suspicious activity that may be a car break-in in progress, call 911 immediately.
