A storied Romanesque Revival building in Downtown Brooklyn which was constructed in the 1890s will soon house five floors and 121 units of rental apartments.

The New York Times reported that the United American Land, the current owner of 248 Duffield Street, has enlisted GreenbergFarrow to design the building’s conversion.

248 Duffield — officially named the Offerman House — was landmarked in 2004. The street-level floors of the eight-story building are currently leased to commercial tenants, including Old Navy, TJ Maxx, and Nordstrom Rack.

The Times reported that rentals will range from studios to three-bedrooms with costs ranging between $2,900 to roughly $5,000 per month.

Jody Laboz of United American Land told the Times that amenities will include a rooftop lounge which “will have a fire pit, grills, a lawn area, and a large movie screen.”

Citi Habitats will be in charge of leasing the new apartments. David J. Maundrell III, who is executive vice president for new development in Brooklyn and Queens, believes the “historical authenticity” of the building will make the apartments attractive to renters.

One of the most famous of the building’s previous tenants was Martin’s Department Store, “which operated there for more than 50 years until closing in 1979,” according to the Times. “

Known for its bridal wear, the store was considered a high-end counterpart to the Abraham & Strauss department store across the street, which now is a Macy’s.”

YIMBY reported occupancy for the building is scheduled for Spring 2017.
