28 Days Of Kensington Felonies: December 15, 2013–January 12, 2014

Once again the 66th Precinct has put together descriptions of some of the crimes that occurred in Kensington over the last 28 days.  The 66 is split into 13 sectors, and this report covers sectors G (Beverley Road to Avenue F; 37th Street to Coney Island Avenue) and K (Caton Avenue to Beverley Road; 37th Street to Coney Island Avenue).

Felony crimes that have increased from December 15, 2013 to January 12, 2014 from the same period the previous year include robbery (six this year compared to four last year), burglary (five compared to three), and homicide (one compared to zero). Those that have decreased include grand larceny (six compared to 14) and grand larceny auto (two compared to three).

ROBBERY

Friday, December 27
According to police, two men stopped a 54-year-old man walking home from work at about 2:10am on Ocean Parkway between Avenue C and Cortelyou Road. One demanded his possessions while the other displayed a knife. Cops say the victim resisted, but the thieves took his cell phone, wallet, credit cards and cash, as well as leaving a lump over his right eye.

Saturday, December 28
Cops say two men were in an apartment on Beverley Road between Church Avenue and E 2nd Street at about 2:30am. When one man, aged 50, put his iPad on the bed, the other took it.  When the 50-year-old man asked for his iPad back, police say, his companion gave him an elbow to his nose, leaving a gash. The thief then fled the scene.

Sunday, December 29
A man approached a 19-year-old woman on Cortelyou Road between E 9th Street and Coney Island Avenue at about 11:25pm, police say. He threatened her with a knife, then grabbed a gold chain from her neck and fled.

BURGLARY

Friday, December 20
A man came home from work to E 5th Street between Beverley Road and Avenue C, only to find his personal belongings scattered all over his apartment, cops say. It is estimated that the thief entered through a window sometime between 11am and 5:25pm and took five watches before fleeing.

Saturday, December 21
Police say an unsuccessful perp put a ladder up against the back of a 39-yr-old man’s house on Albemarle Road between E 2nd and E 3rd Streets sometime between 7am and 5:15pm, then climbed through a rear window and left via the side door without taking anything.

Tuesday, December 24
A thief got lucky sometime between between 9 and 10:30pm Christmas Eve, cops say, when he or she found an unlocked door on Avenue C between E 7th and E 8th Streets and made off with a cell phone.

Thursday, January 2
Police say a thief stole $57,000 from Standard Express on McDonald Avenue between Church Avenue and Avenue C sometime between 2 and 4am by cutting through a sheetrock wall and into a safe. Unfortunately, the store’s cameras had been turned off for the night.

GRAND LARCENY

Sunday, December 15
The theft of a wallet, credit cards, and a cell phone from behind the counter of a local laundromat on Coney Island Avenue between Beverley Road and Avenue C was captured on video at about 1am, cops say.  The laundromat worker, 21, told police while on the job he stored his property behind the counter for safekeeping.

Wednesday, January 8
A 28-year-old man left his tools on the sidewalk on Ocean Parkway between Avenue C and Cortelyou Road while he went to retrieve his van at about 12:30pm, say police. Video then captured a man driving a Home Depot van, who stopped and took the tools.

GRAND LARCENY AUTO

Tuesday, December 31
Police say a motorcycle that had been parked on Ocean Parkway between Church Avenue and Beverley Road was stolen at about 2pm.

HOMICIDE

Wednesday, January 7
Police say they found the body of 57-year-old Mahiuddin Mahmud in the basement of his 546 McDonald Avenue building at about 12:30am with fatal injuries to his neck and face. The 66th Precinct Detective Squad later arrested 27-year-old Rasel Siddiquee, a tenant of Mahmud’s, at JFK  Airport as he was attempting to board a plane to Kuwait. Siddiquee has since confessed to the crime, and thousands of neighbors attended a prayer service for Mahmud on January 10.
