16th Street Is Rising Up

The block on 16th Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues is growing. Upwards.

A small two-story home at 96 16th Street (between 3rd and 4th Avenues) will have a very modern look — a striking visual presence that differs considerably from the primarily two- and three-story buildings on the block.

According to YIMBY, the firm Jorge Mastropietro Atelier bought the property for $1,200,000. The 5-story building will be 50 feet tall and include 4 two-bedroom condos. The firm did choose to set back the 5th floor, “allowing the four-story facade to line up with the brick apartment houses that line much of the block,” YIMBY writes.

The application for the building was filed in December 2014, and the approval process for their plans will be voted on in November 2015.

When we stopped by to take photos of the building, a curious neighbor was out walking his dog. Tim Holt lives a few buildings away and told us he has been on the block for 35 years. “I work at Western Beef in East New York. Been there forever.”

He asked to take a look at the renderings and paused for a moment. “This is definitely different. This’ll be a different block,” Holt said.
