12-Year-Old Boy Mugged, Laundromat Robbed & More Recent Crime In Our Area

The precinct is split into 13 sectors, and this report covers sectors G (Beverley Road to Avenue F; 37th Street to Coney Island Avenue) and K (Caton Avenue to Beverley Road; 37th Street to Coney Island Avenue).

ROBBERIES

Coney Island Ave between Ditmas & 18th Aves
Tuesday, February 4, between 8:50-9:10am
Police say three men grabbed a teenaged boy from behind as he walked on the sidewalk toward the bus stop. The perps demanded the boy turn over his belongings, when one allegedly punched the boy in the face and took off with his MetroCard, high school ID, cash, and cell phone. The 66th Precinct detective squad reportedly arrested one of the perps the same day, and a second on February 15.

Church & McDonald Avenues
Tuesday, February 4, 9pm
Two suspects stole $36 from a man at the Church Avenue F train’s street-side elevator kiosk, police say. The men allegedly ran up to the victim as he was getting into the elevator, asked him to hold it, and then, as one perp held open the door, the other showed the man a gun, demanding he give up all his money. According to the cops, the victim did as told, pulled out his wallet, and handed over the money. The perps then fled.

Coney Island Ave between Beverley Rd & Ave C
Sunday, February 9, 2:38am
A perpetrator stole $1,000 from a laundromat by by pretending to have a firearm, cops say, convincing the clerk to open the register and give the thief the money. Caught on videotape, police say this robbery is under further investigation.

Avenue C & East 9th Street
Sunday, February 9, 1pm
Police say three men accosted a man walking on Avenue C and demanded he turn over his cell phone. When the victim refused, cops say the thieves pushed him to the ground, causing an injury to his arm. They then allegedly robbed him of his wallet, ID, and $80 cash, and fled.

Ditmas Avenue & East 8th Street
Thursday, February 13, 8am
A 12-year-old boy was walking to school when cops say two perps stopped him to ask for the time, and then his money. One of them flashed a pocket knife while the other went through the boy’s pockets, police report, robbing him of his cash and a cell phone. The 66th Precinct detective squad arrested both of them: one on February 15, and the second on February 16.

Cortelyou Rd & East 7th Street
Thursday, February 13, 7:40am
Another child, this time a 12-year-old girl, was walking to school when two men waylaid her. Police say one tapped her on the shoulder, asking her for a dollar, and when the girl said no, the suspect started going through her pockets. She tried to push him off, but cops say he punched her in the face, pushed her to ground, and started kicking her. Then the men fled the scene empty-handed.

Coney Island Avenue between Beverley Rd & Ave C
Wednesday, February 19, 10:30pm
Police say a man walked into a bodega, pretending he had a gun, and demanded money. The clerk pushed the perp away, but not to be deterred, cops say the suspect went round the counter and stole $1,200 cash from the register, then fled the scene.

McDonald Avenue between Albemarle Rd & Church Ave
Friday, February 7, between 9:40am-1:30pm
Someone pried open an apartment door and stole money, a Canon camera, and a tablet, according to police.

A woman was robbed of her jewelry by someone who entered through the front door of her home, police say.

GREEN DOT MONEYPAK CARD SCAM

The way this scam works, someone calls the victim, or mark, pretending to be from Con Ed or the IRS, saying unless the mark pays up his outstanding debt with a prepaid Green Dot MoneyPak Card, he could be deported or his utility turned off. Once the scammer has the Green Dot MoneyPak card’s serial number, he can rob if of its funds.

So far this scam has happened in these four precincts during January:
66th: January 16 and 28
68th: January 28
70th: January 9
78th: January 23 and 29

February brought two new cases to the 66 Precinct.

Dahill Road between 43rd & 44th Sts
Friday, February 14, 8am
In a phone call, the scammer allegedly said he was from the IRS and informed the man he had an outstanding warrant, which he could clear up by paying with a prepaid Green Dot MoneyPak Card. The man put $7,500 on the card, which cops report the scammer then swiped from the card, using the serial number on the back which the victim gave him.

47th Street between 8th & 9th Aves
Friday, February 14, 2pm
A woman got a call from a scammer who claimed to be from the IRS, and in her case, police say the scammer threatened her with arrest and deportation if she didn’t pay. According to police, she put $969 on a Green Dot MoneyPak Card, as instructed, and the scammer took it.
