Be careful when crossing the street, even if you have the light. A local man was hit by a car at DeKalb Avenue and South Oxford Street early this morning after his dog reportedly ran ahead of him into the street and she got hit instead while saving it, said police.

However, a man identifying himself as the victim responded in the comments section of this article that his dog, Olive, was on a leash and did not run ahead of him — rather, they had the walk-light and we’re walking together in the crosswalk when the driver “blew through the light” and hit them.

According to police, the incident occurred shortly before 7:15am this morning and the driver stayed at the scene. The man was taken to Brooklyn Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The dog was unharmed.

Neighbors reported hearing a “sickening sound” that was “another reminder of how dangerous this stretch is during rush hour.”

Correction: This article has been updated to reflect the fact that the victim was a man, not a woman, contrary to initial police reports. It also includes a comment from the person identifying himself as the victim.
