Where to Get Hamantaschen for Purim

Hamantaschen From John's Bakery

This Sunday is Purim, a holiday that commemorates the time when the Jewish people living in Persia were saved from extermination, is a time for costumes, celebration, and of course, hamantaschen. The buttery triangular cookies are usually filled with fruit jams like raspberry, apricot, or prune, or poppy seeds, and they vary in size — you’ll find some that are bite-sized, and some that are bigger than your hand.

Where To Find Them

John’s Bakery (1322 Cortelyou Road) is selling them for $1.50 per cookie. Pictured above, they’re pretty hefty, the dough is dense and moist (not dry and crumbly like some). Choose between either raspberry or prune.

Market (1211 Cortelyou Road) doesn’t have them yet, but they told us they will be making some over the next few days in time for the holiday.

Beyond Ditmas Park

Ostrovitsky Bakery (1124 Avenue J, Midwood) is a quick trip on the subway or B68 bus, $7 a pound for the small ones, $1.50 per piece for the large ones.

Stern’s Bakery (5405 13th Ave, Borough Park) is a bit of a trip on the B16 bus if you don’t have a car, but it was recommended to us by a Hasidic rabbi, so that’s our next stop.
