Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein announced Friday she had secured $2 million for new security cameras and increased lighting at the Sheepshead Bay/Nostrand Houses in order to deter crime and improve safety for residents.

“For so long the residents of Sheepshead/Nostrand Houses, many who subsist on extremely restricted incomes, have been living without proper security measures often found in other large building complexes,” Weinstein said in a press release. “These monies will help deter many who’ve seen NYCHA developments as an easy target for illicit and illegal activities and will increase the quality of life for residents.”

The money is part of a $42 million dollar initiative by Governor Andrew Cuomo to improve security at 76 NYCHA properties, Weinstein said. Cuomo’s announced the initiative three days after the fatal shooting of Officer Randolph Holder, who patrolled NYCHA properties. Holder was allegedly killed by Tyrone Howard, a resident of the East River Houses.

The Sheepshead Bay/Nostrand Houses have seen several violent incidents this year, including the fatal shooting of a 36-year-old man in August. On Saturday, cops recovered a loaded .380 caliber handgun during a raid a the Sheepshead Bay Houses.

“The residents of Sheepshead Houses are extremely grateful for these necessary security updates,” said Linda Wade, President of the Sheepshead Houses Tenant Association. “These improvements are sure to improve the quality of life for all residents and the neighborhood on the whole.”
