Weiner Receives Threats, Hate Mail and Powder

Police are still on the scene around Congressman Anthony Weiner’s Sheepshead Bay offices inside the Lundy’s building after the congressman received angry and potentially threatening messages in the wake of the healthcare bill.

At his Kew Gardens, Queens, office his staffers received an envelope of white powder. Ultimately the powder was deemed not to be a dangerous substance, but Haz-Mat officials were dispatched and his staff underwent decontamination.

Weiner also received letters, including one signed with a swastika and another addressed to “Schlomo” Weiner.

Other congressman have also been targeted by right-wing activists and the Tea Party, including openly-gay Representative Barney Frank (D-Ma.), whose orientation was ridiculed, and civil rights legend Representative John Lewis (D-Ga.), who was called by racial epithets.
