Weekend Events Recap: What’s Happening Around South Slope

Still looking for something to do this weekend? From biking the branches to touching a few trucks, South Slope is the place to be. Here’s a recap of some of the events in our neck of the woods.

Bike The Branches
When: Saturday, May 17, 10am-5pm, Finish Line 5-7pm
Where: Various locations
What: The ride has a route that features Brooklyn history, breweries, live music, storytimes from local authors, and more. Get your Branch Passport stamped at as many branches as you can visit between 10am-5pm, then end the day at the Central Library’s Finish Line Celebration from 5-7pm, where they’ll have prizes for adults and children who visit the most branches.
How much: Registration is $20 for adults, $10 for seniors and children under 17, $40 for a family of up to 2 adults and 3 children, and $150 for a team of up to 10 people. All proceeds will benefit the Brooklyn Public Library.

Bike The Branches Bake Sale, Raffle, Music And More
When: Saturday, May 17 starting at 10am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Speaking of Bike the Branches, our neighborhood branch will have all sorts of fun activities to celebrate the event on Saturday, so whether you’re biking or not, be sure to swing by for the Friends of Park Slope Library bake sale and book raffle (starting at 10am), Silly Jazz with Camille Harris (10:30am), and Kings Bay Y Disco Time (1pm).
How much: Free.

Touch-A-Truck
When: Saturday May 17, 12-5 pm
Where: 18th Street, between 6th and 7th Avenues
What: Find out what makes a concrete mixer work, sit behind the wheel of a fire truck, and even explore an Army Reserve Humvee when the successful PS 295 fundraiser, Touch-A-Truck, returns to South Slope. Fans should look for more trucks, longer hours, delicious goodies (can we say Kimchi Taco Truck), arts, crafts, bounce houses and more.
How much: $8 per person,$15 for two people, but no charge for infants worn by their parents.

Read Aloud Day
When: Saturday, May 17, 1-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Sponsored by the Brooklyn Reading Council, this free event invites elementary-aged children to browse through a selection of books on Saturday, and chose a favorite to bring home.
How much: Free.

Springtime Art & Music Showcase
When: Saturday, May 17, 6:30-9:30pm
Where: Brooklyn Works at 159, 159 20th Street, 1B, between 3rd and 4th Avenues
What: Come “mingle with fellow creatives and entrepreneurs” at the first art exhibition of the season from our neighbors at Brooklyn Works at 159. Look for new works from 5 local artists, live music, and refreshments. Proceeds from the evening will benefit Common Ground, a non-profit dedicated to ending homelessness in NYC.
How much: Free.

Fleece Festival
When: Saturday and Sunday, May 17-18, 11am-5pm
Where: Prospect Park Zoo, Flatbush Avenue near Ocean Avenue
What: Warmer temperatures mean that it’s time for our Prospect Park Zoo sheep to receive their spring sheering. Families are invited to watch the zoo’s flock lose their winter coats, take part in crafts, listen to music, and more.
How much: $8 for adults, $5 for children 3-12, $6 for seniors 65+,and free for children under 3

Shred Fest
When: Sunday, May 18, 10am-4pm
Where: Prospect Park West and 3rd Street
What: Safely shred papers containing personal information for free using shredding trucks, and get free identity theft prevention tips.
How much: Free.

Fabulous Fifth Avenue Fair
When: Sunday, May 18 from 12-6pm
Where: 5th Avenue from Sterling Place and 12th Street
What: Rides, antique automobiles, collectibles, live music, food, shopping, and more during this massive annual street fair.
How much: Free!

History In Your Hands: Fleece Fun
When: Sunday May 18, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Ever wondered how wool was used on a Colonial farm? Visit Lefferts House weekends in May to brush wool with carding paddles, spin yarn using a drop spindle, and even make a felt ball to take home with you. Ewe won’t want to miss it!
How much: $3 suggested donation
