Ways to Be Safe as Thefts Increase With the Warm Weather

Comparing the most recent CompStat report, shown above, with the one from this time last month (week ending 4/8/12), there have been 79 incidents of grand larceny, 36 robberies, and 29 burglaries since then. Those stats are still slightly lower than this time last year, but it may help show how the warm weather does coincide with an increase in crime–so be aware of your surroundings, don’t walk in a tunnel while you check your iPhone, don’t leave anything in your car, etc., etc.

The 70th Precinct has these tips for home and pedestrian safety:

• Lock your house windows and doors when you leave your home.

• Use motion lights at night if possible.

• If you go on vacation, ask a neighbor to remove circulars and mail from your mailbox or front porch.

• Don’t leave valuables near an open window where an unknown person can reach in and take them.

• If you are robbed, don’t be a hero. Let the robber have your property and try to remember what the robber looks like. Remember sex, race, skin coloring, age, height and weight, clothing, voices, scars, tattoos, and nicknames used.

If you have any questions you’d like to ask about crime or policing in the neighborhood, a reminder that the monthly 70th Precinct Community Council meeting is next Wednesday, May 30 at 7:30pm at 175 Lawrence Avenue.

Finally, if you’ve been the victim of the crime, after you’ve reported it to the police, please send us an email at ditmasparkcorner@gmail.com or fill out the form on the map page with the details, including date, approximate time, and what happened, and we’ll add it.
